2008 11 01 - Manual Transfer Switch Installation

HOME
These pictures show the installation of the manual transfer switch that is used with the emergency power generator that I purchased on 18 Oct 2008. This turned into a two week project. I got the switch installed today, but the wiring had to wait a week.

The reason I decided to get an emergency power generator was the new furnace that we had installed on 24 Mar 2008. The old furnace worked even when the power was out so I was never much concerned about power failures. Now, however, the new furnace requires AC power to operate. It is a side vented furnace and requires a blower motor to circulate air for combustion. It also has an electronic ignition instead of a pilot light. Because we have had power failures lasting up to 4 days in the past I felt it necessary to be prepared. So, the purchase of a 5500 W generator and the installation of the manual transfer switch became necessary.

As I mentioned, the wiring was completed on 8 Nov 2008, but I didn't take any pictures of the finished job. I tested running the house on the generator. The heaviest load is the microwave. The furnace requires quite a few starting watts to get the motor going, but its running wattage is only about 700. So, I feel prepared for the next power outage!
